About Sam O'Neill family tree
Thank you for visiting this website about our family history. Our ancestors were ordinary decent people whose children moved from country Ireland into Belfast around the time of the Irish Famine.Just as Kathleen and I moved to Australia for a better life and opportunity for our family & what a good decision that has been. The latest additions are Elliott O'Neill , son of Owen & Maria, & Charlie Hickey ,son of Moira & Cameron .The O'Neills & McAllisters were from Armagh & Monaghan. The Mc Kinleys were farmers from FairHead at Ballycastle while the Scullions and Caulfields were from Crumkille and Ahoghill near Ballymena. The Caulfields were particularly disadvantaged at the partition of Ireland when the contract to make boots for the R.I.C. was lost by their uncle, Bernard O'Neill (Ballymena ) and the new police contract for the Royal Ulster Constabulary went to another company.
The Caulfield's who worked for their uncle in the factory left and opened businesses in Belfast and shortly afterwards Bernard O'Neill's boot factory closed. Grandfather Charles O'Neill cut and hauled timber from the Mourne Mountains to the Belfast docks after arriving from Loughgall, Co Armagh sometime before the 1900's. I was told by Joe McWilliams, the artist who has since died, that he was probably the 1st millionaire on my family tree. Recently I have been able to find Lizzie Scullion , my grandmother's sister, who immigrated to America. Her story is particularly difficult as first husband Andrew Conway was shot at Ypres and died during 1st W.W. after she had given birth to William Conway, their son. It was a big event to be able to trace her grandchildren and meet them in Buffalo during 2022. Also likewise with the O'Maras whose ancestors the McGraths arrived in New York about 1917.
I have been able to also trace our relationship to Sir Dan McGarvey who married the daughter of my grandmother's brother.
A big thank you to my relations who supplies documents & photos so that I could record our story especially my sister Joan & Colette O'Neill(America ). Fr Joe Houston in China shared the obituary details of Fr Bernard O'Neill who was a Columban Missionary in China from 1935 to after 1946. The catalyist that started this tree was the year that I spent in Nanchang, China, & discovered that he had lived near where I was living. Also Paddy Whyte , his wife was Teresa O'Neill, who supplied his family tree and photos. When I started this journey I had little information and few photos.
We have a guest book on this website so please feel free to leave your comments. Enjoy the family tree and if you would like anything added or deleted from the information that I have then please contact me.
